Designing a life never goes out of style

European Summer: Recommendations for Discovering Barcelona

Hi, all and hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend! We’re officially in September and have made it to the final days of the summer season. While I’m thrilled for the fall to kick off, I can’t help my reminisce on my travels this summer and the memories made. To celebrate this season coming to a close, I thought it would be right if I highlight some of my favorite moments from my European summer, starting with Barcelona, Spain. I have been a huge fan of Barcelona since The Cheetah Girls 2 released on Disney Channel (hands down the peak Disney Channel era). There was something so mesmerizing and enticing watching this city and its culture come to life on the screen. The city lived up to all of my expectations when I have the good fortune to visit during a 10-day tour of Spain during my junior year. I loved the city so much that I made a promise to return, leading me to step back into the Spanish culture again earlier this summer with a college friend of mine. There’s something about Barcelona that makes it a great European summer destination, and people are flocking towards it. While it’s difficult to create a one size fits all travel guide, I thought it’s be great to suggest a few activities for the general public. So, here are my five recommendations for discovering and exploring Barcelona, Spain.

Recommendations for Discovering Barcelona, Spain

Explore the Sagrada Família

Columns resembling trees inside the Sagrada Família

I can’t talk about Barcelona without mentioning one of its most iconic landmarks. Known as the world’s tallest church, Sagrada Família is an absolutely stunning Catholic church, over 100 years in the making and counting. Often regarded as his life work, Antoni Gaudí designed and built the Sagrada Família until his death. When he passed, work continued to complete Gaudí’s design and become the well-known church seen today. While 2026 was a very pivotal year with the structural aspects finalized, the Sagrada Família will not be fully complete for another few years. The detailed exteriors are a sight to see in-person representing the popular Gothic architecture of the city as well as prominent figures and scenes in Christianity, such as the notable Nativity scene. Continuing inside the church, you’ll find the intricate columns resembling trees in the forest that draw the eyes up to the breathtaking stain glassed windows. These pictures and descriptions don’t even do it justice; it is an absolute must to see if you truly want to discover Barcelona.

Stroll Park Güell

Park Güell blends gardens and Spanish architecture over a vast amount of land. The park sits up on a hill that overlooks Barcelona, allowing you to catch a better glimpse of the Sagrada Família’s size in comparison to the rest of the city. With the Gaudí style architecture woven throughout the park, you’ll notice his importance and lasting impact not only on Barcelona, but the country of Spain as well. Paths are woven through to discover native horticulture as well as discover iconic landmarks inside the park, such as the Dragon Stairway and the Serpentine Bench on the Nature Square. Park Güell also house the Gaudí House Museum, which embodies his distinguishable style, and serves as backdrop to Serpentine Bench.

Sample Tapas and Sangria

Recommendations for Discovering Barcelona: sampling an assortment of tapas

Vibrant social lives are pertinent to Spanish culture as locals emphasize the importance of gathering together, especially over tapas. It’s part of the Spanish culture and a time for you to slow down to connect with one another. When venturing to a new city, I think it’s very important to embrace and experience culture which is why I’d recommend discovering Barcelona by indulging in the local cuisine. Tapas can include a wide range of items including, but not limited to: jamón ibérico (premium cured ham), patatas bravas (fried Spanish potatoes), croquetas (fried fritters with ham or chicken), pan con tomate (ripe tomato with olive oil and salt on toasted or grilled bread). With a number of options to choose from, you can truly get a sense of the culture. While you’re at it, you can’t skip out on some delicious Spanish sangria. This popular drink marinates citrus fruit with its rinds in dry Spanish win, allowing for a balanced cocktail to emerge. Enjoy it with a tapa or two on an outdoor patio for what feels like a quintessential afternoon in Barcelona.

Browse La Boqueria off La Rambla

Street lined pedestrian street known as La Rambla
Recommendations for Discovering Barcelona: La Boqueria

Dive further into more Spanish culture and food by visiting La Boqueria off La Rambla, the famous and vibrant boulevard in Barcelona. La Boqueria is public open-air market located in the city center containing several stalls full of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and an array of meats and cheeses. Additionally, it houses a number of bars in which you can dine inside the hustle and bustle of the market. Perfect for a quick bite and sampling of local goods, La Boqueria is a solid destination to experience the local fare. With an entrance off La Rambla, you can also explore Barcelona’s iconic tree-lined boulevard that contains a wide variety of shops and other cultural landmarks as well as demonstrates the city’s vibrant street life. Note, that the La Rambla is currently under heavy construction; however, it still encourages for visitors and locals alike venture down this pedestrian-only street.
